Message Why 0W40? Because it acts like a "0" weight oil at lower temperatures and a "40" weight oil at operating temperatures.

Most of the wear happens at start up. Running this oil greatly reduces start up wear.

At operating temps, the oil coats everything very nicely.

In fact, in our turbocharged cars, we're better off running a synthetic 0W30 over a 5W30 over a 10W30. Why? The viscosity when we are higher than operating temperatures will be higher with 0W30 than a 5W30 than a 10W30. You want that to avoid metal to metal contact.

At lower temps, like when you first start your car, you want to have the lowest viscosity so that it flows better.
